Power And Duties

The department is headed by a Jailor with Sub-Divisional officer (civil) as ex-officio superintendent. The Jailor is assisted by 1(one) Asst Jailor, 4(four) Head warders, 36(thirty six) warders, and 6(six) female warders. There are various norms to discharge the functions at different level as laid down in the Assam Jail Manual. The Jail has 1(one) visiting doctor for prisoner’s medical needs.

There are 10(ten) non-executive staff assigned with different functions to assist the Jail administration.

1. SDO(Civil) 1(one) Act as Ex-officio Superintendent.
2 Jailor 1(one) Jailor is the chief executive officer of the Jail. He also acts as the Drawing and disbursing officer. He is responsible for the safe custody of the inmates and also ensures that proper disciplines are maintained.
3 Assistant Jailor 1(one) Supervision and maintenance of discipline of all categories of staff under him, admission and release and maintenance of records of convict prisoners and UTPs, Court matters, Prisoner’s feeding/Ration and any other works as and when assigned by the superior officer.
4. Head Warders 4(four) The Head warders shall be in-charge of all the warders on duty and their shifts. They shall be responsible for the smartness and cleanliness of the custodial staff and their being at all times and also see that the warders are properly dressed and performing their duties effectively.
5 Warders 36(thirty six) Warders on duty perform round the clock monitoring of prisoners. They are assigned to look after ward or set of wards to see that the prisoners maintain cleanliness and also to examine the wards, cells of the prisoners and to report monthly to the Jailor of any sign of sickness or any prisoners complaining sickness.
6 Female Warder 6(six) The female warder shall have the entire care of the female prisoners. She should be present at the opening of the female wards and during lock-up and also to see that no male prisoners enter the female wards unless accompanied by an authorized jail officer.
7. Medical Officer (visiting doctor) 1(one) A Medical officer looks after the health of the prisoners.
8 L.D.A. cum Computer Assistant 1(one) He maintains all records relating to the budget allocation and expenditure of the office. He maintains all records and files of the office and any other works/duties assigned by the Jailor.
9 Typist 1(one) Tying of all official documents.
10 Water Carrier 2(two) To fetch water for the prisoners
11 Driver(adhoc) 1(one) He drives the office vehicle
12 Barber(Adhoc) 1(one) To cut hair of the staff and prisoners
13 Peon 1(one) Carrying of files and running of daks and timely opening and closing of office.
14. Sweeper 2(two) Cleaning of office rooms and other open areas of the office complex.
15 Chaplain 1(one) To have counseling and prayer fellowship with the prisoners and staff.
