BRIEF HISTORY OF DISTRICT JAIL, TUENSANG
District Jail Tuensang was established on 9th January 1968, with a capacity of 80(Eighty) Inmates- 60 (Sixty) Male Inmates and 20 (Twenty) Female Inmates covering an area of 15,389 acres located west of Tuensang Town and 2Km away from the main Town.
District Jail Tuensang is styled as Justice & Correctional Institution. The main objective is Retribution, Incapacitation, Deterrence, Rehabilitation and to convert the inmates into ordinary members of society by providing them with useful skills and respect for the law. The primary aims are to ensure safe custody, care and welfare and to improve the inmates’ self-esteem and strengthen their desire to improve. To engage, rehabilitation and reform the inmates, with a mission to promote public safety by holding offenders accountable for their action and reducing the risk of future criminal behaviours.
The overall objectives are to scale up prison governance by ensuring a transparent, problem solving, friendly and trustworthy prison management system and to make lives inside out the prison ensuring that fewer inmates commit crimes after they are released.

Functions
Repentance i.e. to keep offenders in Jail where he could ponder over the consequences of his wrong deeds. To rehabilitate the inmates so they can become contributing members of society upon their release.
Duties
Maintain control and discipline including use of physical restrain. Maintaining a periodic patrol either inside or outside the institution to ensure the security and integrity of the institution. Supervise the issuance of clothing and other personal effects to inmates.
